STRATHALBYN, South Australia, 20 July 2026 — Lunio Energy, a South Australian developer and operator of grid-scale energy storage, has energised its first battery and begun trading in the National Electricity Market (NEM), marking the company’s move from developing projects to owning and operating them.

The Strathalbyn BESS, a 5 MW / 20 MWh battery in the Alexandrina Council area, is now connected to the grid and responding to the market in real time, storing energy when it is abundant and cheap and returning it to the grid when it is needed most. It is the first of a pipeline of storage projects Lunio is developing across South Australia.

South Australia leads the nation on renewable generation, regularly meeting the majority of its demand from wind and solar. That success has made storage the next piece of the puzzle: batteries firm variable generation, help hold the grid stable, and capture value from the price swings a high-renewables system produces. Lunio’s first project is built to do exactly that.

“This is the moment Lunio goes from developing projects to running them,” said Seth Thuraisingham, CEO and Founder of Lunio Energy. “We built the Strathalbyn battery to earn its place in a grid that already runs on renewables for much of the year, and it is now doing that job in the market every day. It is the first asset in a pipeline we are building across South Australia.”

“South Australia is leading the nation on renewable generation, well ahead of other states that are only now moving to retire coal. But the hard work is far from done. Storage like ours plays a supporting role, filling the gap so that renewable energy is dependable around the clock and the grid holds stable as more wind and solar come on. It is one important piece of a much bigger effort still ahead, and Strathalbyn is our first step.”

The Strathalbyn battery is now trading energy in the NEM, capturing value from price movements through the day, with participation in frequency-control ancillary services (FCAS) markets to follow.
